Out of curiosity, I had a go at mapping the OTW Board visually over time. I couldn't find a tool that let me do everything I wanted but it turned out rather pretty - and possibly informative too.

*Numbers may be dodgy as I pulled them from the Board of Directors page and had to make some assumptions. If you have better information - please share!

We've had 22 board members in the last 7 years - that's a lot of dedication :)
OTW Board Population by Year

  • Green shades & large dot = served full term
  • Orange shades & medium dot = served a full term and resigned early from second term
  • Red shades & small dot = resigned

Yeay graphs! This is really interesting.

I'm not sure whether the 'resignations' in the first few years are accurate - one third of the Board is up for relection every year, and I think that some people signed up in the early years on pre-agreed shortened terms, to allow for the elections process to kick in. According to early Board minutes, Misha Tepper's involvement was limited to one year, and she and Cathy Cupitt are listed as 'retiring' in the December 2008 newsletter, which implicitly confirms my recollection that they were making a planned exit. Giving them a different colour coding would give a more accurate picture of the org's Board retention over the years.

I'm fairly sure Elizabeth Y was the first Board member to resign rather than retire, on the grounds of ill health. So Board membership was stable and working as intended until 2010.

ETA: Looked back at the FAQ and it says: 'A third of the board seats were up for election in 2008; two founding members gave up their seats, and two new Board members were affirmed by the membership. Within three years, the entire board will have been elected by the membership.' So yeah, MT and CC served full terms in the sense that their departure was part of the org's electoral process, not a resignation.

Not dismissive! Interesting to know the context, though. I wasn't sure what the situation was with CC - the Board minutes suggest that MT was only ever able to dedicate one year. Still, I think it's important that the Board only lost the number of members it expected to lose at that point, although I suppose if the early exit for someone hadn't already been scheduled they might have decided to go anyway. Nothing like the recent rate of attrition, though. I feel like the amount of work involved in being a Board member has really increased over past years, for various reasons.

Yeah, it's really since the end of 2010 that it's destabilized, with 10 people stepping down in two and a half years and 5 of them having served one year or less (if you count extended hiatus as time not served). Those are some worrisome numbers.
